Vinyl Boxed Set
This project is a carefully curated boxed vinyl set, capturing three distinct Afrocentric musical energies:
Soul Food, Alté, and Afro-Folk. Each collection explores African and African American musical influences, while celebrating the cultural depth and diversity that they
are meant to represent.
Soul Food serves as a triple entendre: it’s food for the soul, a collection of songs focused on freedom, self-love, and mental liberation, curated from African American artists.
It also reflects the genre-spanning influence of African music, blending rap, hip hop, soul, jazz, and alternative sounds. Alté, synonymous with the Afrobeats movement, embraces fusion genres like dancehall, reggae, hip-hop, and alternative R&B, representing a cultural movement that challenges traditions in Nigeria. Afro-Folk delves into the rustic, soulful, and deeply traditional sounds of West Africa, emphasizing storytelling and the roots of
African music.
For the physical design, I created custom vinyl sleeves, stickers, and a box sleeve using Canon Luster sticker paper. The box itself was handcrafted from wooden panels, with a snug sleeve-style construction.
The accompanying booklet, printed on high-luster
paper, fits neatly in a transparent sleeve. To honor the rich history of African music, I added gold leaf details
to every element. This project not only allowed me to explore new crafting and packaging techniques but also deepened my appreciation for the cultural legacy of African music. Created in Spring 2023.
